AEO: the structure that makes your answer the one worth quoting.

Answer Engine Optimization is about being the source quoted in featured snippets, voice search and AI-generated summaries. Models pull clean answers: a question-shaped heading, a one-sentence reply underneath it, sourced numbers, and schema that states what the page is. This page shows the formats that get pulled and the habits that keep a well-written page out of the answer box. It will not make you the answer for everything — it makes you quotable for what you genuinely know.

Why AEO matters: Published tracking puts an AI answer or a featured snippet on more than half of Google searches. The studies disagree on the exact share, so treat the figure as an estimate. Seer Interactive measured a 61% fall in click-through when an AI answer appears (3,100 queries, Feb 2026). If your content is not written to be the answer, the click goes to whoever's is.

The 5 AEO Schema Types That Matter Most

1. FAQPage Schema

What it does: Tells search engines "this page contains questions and answers." FAQPage schema makes a page eligible for expandable Q&A in search results, and gives an answer engine a clean pair to lift.

How to implement: Add a JSON-LD block with FAQPage type and a mainEntity array of Question/Answer pairs. Each question should be a real question a user would ask. Each answer should be concise (2-3 sentences) and directly address the question. Do not stuff keywords — write natural Q&A pairs.

Impact: FAQPage markup makes a page eligible for expandable question-and-answer rich results, and it hands an answer engine a clean pair it can lift. The gain is real, but it is not a citation on its own: Google states that structured data is not required for its generative AI features and that no special schema is needed. We count it as one signal, not a guarantee.

2. HowTo Schema

What it does: Structures step-by-step instructional content so search engines can display it as a rich result with numbered steps, images, and estimated time. Procedural questions - "how to optimise for ChatGPT" - are where step-by-step content earns its place.

When to use: Any page that walks through a process with sequential steps. Tutorials, setup guides, recipes and instructional articles are the pages HowTo schema was written for - though Google retired HowTo rich results in 2023, so treat that markup as a helper for readers, not a lever on rankings.

3. Article Schema

What it does: Declares that a page is an article — not a product page, not a landing page. This tells a crawler what the page is for, which is what makes it eligible to be lifted for that kind of question. Article schema should include headline, author, datePublished, and publisher information.

4. BreadcrumbList Schema

What it does: Shows the page's position in your site hierarchy directly in search results (e.g., Home > Blog > Article Title). This improves click-through on ordinary search results, and gives a crawler a clearer picture of your site's structure.

5. Organization + sameAs Schema

What it does: Tells AI models who you are and connects your site to verified profiles. Mainly a GEO signal, it also serves AEO: it keeps your brand attached to the passage when the passage is lifted. Without Organization schema, a passage can be quoted with no brand attached - you lose the credit even when the content appears.

Content Structure for Answer Engines

Beyond schema markup, how you structure your content matters enormously. AI models and answer engines extract content by reading:

  1. Heading hierarchy — H1 defines the topic, H2 defines sections, H3 defines subsections. AI models use this structure to understand what each section is about and whether it answers a specific query.
  2. Paragraph breakup — Short paragraphs, one idea each, are easier to excerpt than one wall of text. Each paragraph should make one point. Aim for 2-4 sentences per paragraph.
  3. Bulleted and numbered lists — A list is easier to lift than a wall of prose: each pair stays attached to its own answer. Key points, steps, and features should always be in lists.
  4. Direct answers — The first sentence after each H2 should directly answer the implied question. Write the first sentence of a section as the answer: that is the sentence a reader takes away, and the one worth quoting.

AEO vs GEO: Which Should You Focus On?

FactorAEOGEO
Target platformGoogle featured snippets, voice search, "People Also Ask"ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews
Primary signalFAQPage, HowTo, Article schemaOrganization + sameAs, OG tags, JSON-LD, content depth
User seesRich result or snippet in search resultsCitation within a generated paragraph
Click potentialHigher — users click rich results to expand/read moreLower — users often get full answer without clicking
DifficultyLower — schema templates are straightforwardHigher — requires entity building and content investment

In practice, you need both. AEO ensures you appear in Google's answer layer. GEO ensures you appear in AI chatbots. The schemas overlap — FAQPage helps both, Organization schema helps both, and good content structure helps both. Our order: AEO first (faster wins), then GEO (higher long-term value).

Questions about AEO

What is Answer Engine Optimization?

AEO is the practice of structuring content to appear in direct answers — featured snippets, voice search, People Also Ask boxes, and AI-generated summaries. It uses FAQPage, HowTo, Article, and BreadcrumbList schema.

What is the most important AEO schema?

FAQPage markup makes a page eligible for expandable Q&A in search results, and gives an answer engine a clean pair to lift. Google states that structured data is not required for its generative AI features, so we count it as one strong signal — not a guarantee, and not a citation by itself.

Should I focus on AEO or GEO first?

Our order: AEO first - a few weeks, with schema templates - then GEO, which is months of entity building and content work. The schemas overlap — FAQPage helps both, Organization schema helps both.
