Your rankings may not have dropped at all. The answer above your link took the click.
AI search visibility measures how often your brand shows up inside AI-generated answers, not just in the blue links below them. Google AI Overviews now appear in 48-55% of searches (BrightEdge, Feb 2026), so the page that gets cited takes the visit that used to be yours. This page explains how ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google decide who to cite, and the free two-minute survey that shows where your sector actually stands. Nobody can promise an AI will cite you — the signals they read are public, and what to change is knowable.
How AI Search Is Different From Google
Traditional search engines rank pages by analysing backlinks, keyword density and many other signals (Google says it does not use a domain authority score, which is a third-party metric) — then display a list of 10 blue links. The user clicks one, visits a website, and reads the answer.
AI search engines do something completely different. They read the content themselves, synthesize an answer from multiple sources, and present it directly to the user — often without any click to the original source. The user often never opens a website at all. They get the answer and move on.
| Traditional Search (Google) | AI Search (ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews) |
|---|---|
| Ranks pages by authority and relevance | Synthesizes answers from multiple sources |
| User clicks a link to read the answer | User reads the answer without clicking |
| Optimized via backlinks and keywords | Optimized via structured data, entity signals, and content structure |
| Traffic = clicks to your site | Traffic = citations of your brand in the AI's response |
| Measures success by organic CTR | Measures success by citation rate and brand mention frequency |
This is a fundamental shift. In traditional search, ranking first usually means you get the click. In AI search, being cited in the answer is the win — but it requires completely different optimization.
The Three Pillars of AI Search Visibility
1. SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
The foundation. Without title tags, meta descriptions, an H1, canonical URLs and HTTPS, a crawler struggles to parse your content. SEO is table stakes — if it's broken, nothing else works. But SEO alone is no longer sufficient. A site that ranks #1 on Google can still be invisible to ChatGPT if it lacks the signals AI models look for.
2. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
Optimizing content to appear in direct answers — featured snippets, voice search responses, "People Also Ask" boxes, and AI-generated summaries. AEO focuses on structuring content as clear questions and answers using FAQPage schema, HowTo markup, and Article structure. Published tracking puts an AI answer on more than half of Google searches. The studies disagree on the share, so treat it as an estimate.
3. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
The newest pillar, and the fastest growing. GEO optimizes for AI models like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude that synthesize answers from multiple sources. It focuses on entity signals (Organization schema with sameAs links), Open Graph tags, JSON-LD structured data, content depth, and citation patterns. AI-referred traffic is reported to convert better than organic search — studies quote between two and five times the organic rate, so treat it as directional rather than a figure we measured.
How AI Models Decide What to Cite
Unlike Google's PageRank algorithm, which has been studied for 25 years, AI citation patterns are still being understood. However, research and testing have identified several consistent signals:
- Entity clarity — Can the AI identify who you are? Organization schema with sameAs links (social profiles, Wikipedia, Crunchbase) is the strongest signal we score.
- Content structure — AI models extract from headings (H1→H2→H3), lists, and schema markup. Unstructured paragraphs are hard to excerpt cleanly.
- Attribution — Content with clear authorship and external citations to authoritative sources gets cited more often.
- Freshness — datePublished and dateModified metadata signal that content is current and maintained.
- Citation patterns — AI models learn which sources are cited across the web and prefer to cite sources with strong citation networks of their own.
- Depth — the page covers the question from several angles, so a model has more than one passage to lift. Google states there is no ideal page length, so we do not score a word count.
- Crawler accessibility — A noindex tag, or heavy JavaScript that blocks crawlers, makes a site invisible however good the content is.
Why Traditional SEO Tools Miss AI Visibility
Most SEO tools (Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz) were built for the PageRank era. They measure backlinks, keyword rankings, and domain authority — all signals designed for Google's algorithm. They do not measure:
- Whether ChatGPT cites your brand when asked about your industry
- Whether your FAQPage schema is correctly formatted for AI extraction
- Whether your Organization schema includes sameAs links to verified profiles
- Whether your content meets the depth threshold AI models require for citation
- Whether Perplexity or Google AI Overviews include your pages as sources
That gap is what this audit measures: the seven dimensions we score, not only the signals Google uses.

Is AI search replacing Google?
Not entirely — but the balance is shifting. Gartner forecasts traditional search volume will decline 25% by 2026, while Google now shows an AI answer on 48-55% of searches (BrightEdge) and those answers cut clicks to traditional results by 61% (Seer Interactive, 3,100 queries, 2026). Google still carries the volume; AI is taking a growing share of the decisions made before a click.
How do I check my AI search visibility?
Run the free audit on your own site: enter your URL and three to five competitor URLs. Every page is fetched and scored across SEO, AEO, GEO, Entity, Structure, Citation and crawler access. You get a score out of 100 plus a fix checklist.
Can I rank well on Google but be invisible to ChatGPT?
Yes, absolutely. Google ranks pages using backlinks, domain authority, and keyword relevance. ChatGPT uses entity signals, structured data, content depth, and citation patterns. A site can rank #1 on Google and never appear in a single ChatGPT response because it lacks the signals AI models prioritize. We see it in audit after audit: sites scoring 90+ on SEO and below 40 on GEO.
